When it comes down to it, financial freedom comes down to two things – making more money or saving more money. And while I’m a big believer in side hustling and increasing your income first, no one says saving has to be a grueling, punishing practice. In fact, there are a number of ways that you can make savings happen automatically. Imagine how good it’ll feel to effortlessly be able to pay off that debt or afford that vacation!
Here are my five favorite ways to effortlessly save money. They’ll really change your game if you give them a try!
Acorns is by far my favorite way to save money because they make it SO easy to do. This incredible app works by automatically investing your spare change from everyday purchases. By connecting your credit or debit card, it’ll round up your purchases to the nearest dollar and invest that extra change. Spend $2.50 on a candy bar? Acorns will automatically round it up to $3.00 and invest that extra $0.50 without you even thinking. You can also set it to make recurring investments daily, weekly, or monthly, so you can make saving a habit without even blinking an eye. If you save $5 every couple of days, you’d have $1000 saved in about a year!

Much like Acorns, Stash makes investing easy by doing it bit by bit. Stash is unique in that it specializes in ETFs with certain specializations that allow you to invest in what’s important to you. Are you a social media junkie? The “Trendsetter” ETF will allow you to invest in companies like Twitter, Facebook, and Google. Find yourself to be a bit of a tree hugger? Try the “Clean & Green” and invest in companies that provide solar and wind energy.

This is a little bit more direct. Depending on where you bank, some offer programs that allow you to automatically roll over a certain amount from your checking to your savings every month. Whether it’s something small like $50 or something larger like $1000, it’s one of the easiest and most direct ways to invest in your future.
Ibotta is such a blessing! This app allows you to save money on groceries and online shopping through rebates. It’s as simple as crossing off your groceries, taking a quick picture of your receipt, and getting paid in gift cards! For less than ten minutes a week, it’s one of the easiest ways to save big. What’s better is that they often offer big bonuses, such a $5 bonus back on any one Amazon purchase or a number of brand-specific bonuses like Uber or Silk.

Part survey site, part rebate service, Swagbucks can help you save on every day online purchases AND earn gift cards by completing simple tasks. My favorite gift card-earning activity by far is the Swagbucks TV app, where you basically watch commercials in exchange for points towards a gift card. Put it on while you’re doing household tasks and you’ll have Amazon (or Walmart) gift cards before you even realize it! Better yet, you can get cash back on online purchases, usually on the order of 1-3%. Might not sound like a lot, but it adds up when you’re doing high-ticket purchases like groceries, hotels, or clothes shopping. And when you’re not doing either of those, you can complete simple surveys that you can do while you’re surfing Netflix.
